For over a hundred years, International Women’s Day has celebrated the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. And with an all-female senior team here at Quintessentially Travel, we’re passionate about empowering women and shining a spotlight on trailblazers in the travel industry, this year highlighting the journey of Esin Güral Argat, the founder of JOALI, an award-winning luxury brand with two unique Maldives island resorts.

Since opening in 2018, JOALI Maldives has quickly risen to the top of luxury travellers’ bucket lists as one of the most irresistible resorts in the Maldives. And while the extraordinary appeal of the islands is evident at first glance, it is the foundation of JOALI’s founder, story and values that contributes to its remarkable success.

We caught up with Esin to delve deeper into the origin of JOALI and its unique concept, learning more about how female empowerment and passion are rooted in the resort and her three non-negotiables for success.

What was the meaning behind the name JOALI?

“JOALI is a name that embodies joy. At its heart, it represents ‘the joy of living,’ a philosophy that shapes every experience at JOALI Maldives. At JOALI BEING, this philosophy evolves into the ‘joy of weightlessness,’ a journey of wellbeing and transformation.

The name is also deeply rooted in Maldivian heritage. In Dhivehi, a ‘joali’ refers to a handcrafted woven chair, found at the entrance of nearly every island home. It is a symbol of welcome, a place where life slows down and moments of connection are cherished. With JOALI, we sought to create a haven where this same spirit comes alive. A place where artistry and nature converge to inspire a deep sense of belonging and joy.”

How did you come up with the concept?

“From the beginning, I envisioned JOALI as more than just a destination. It had to be a lifestyle, a philosophy that stays with you long after you leave. I wanted to create something with a soul, a place that would foster a deep emotional connection beyond impeccable service and stunning design.

JOALI Maldives was the first step in this journey. As the first art-immersive resort in the Maldives, it transforms the island into a living gallery through interactive installations and objets d’art. With JOALI BEING, we introduced the first wellbeing island of its kind, a sanctuary dedicated to transformation where science and ancient wisdom come together to create the ‘joy of weightlessness.’ Most recently, JOALI Island Homes redefines island living, offering a rare opportunity to own a private residence fully immersed in JOALI’s world of wellbeing.

Every element of JOALI is deeply personal to me. I was involved in every detail, from the architecture and landscaping to the carefully curated art collections and wellbeing spaces. It is a brand that continues to evolve, not just as a hospitality concept but as a way of life.”

What makes JOALI different from other Maldives properties?

“Throughout my travels, I found that while many luxury hotels offered great food, beautiful design, and intuitive service, they often lacked something deeper, a soul. What sets JOALI Maldives and JOALI BEING apart is this spirit, an energy that surrounds and connects our guests the moment they arrive. It is intangible yet deeply felt.

JOALI Maldives is the first and only art-immersive resort in the Maldives, home to over 18 interactive installations created by world-renowned artists. Culinary artistry is also a defining element, with signature restaurant concepts and menus shaped by Michelin-starred chefs, from the Nikkei cuisine at Saoke to Italian specialities at Bellinis.

At JOALI BEING, we took this vision further by introducing the first dedicated wellbeing island of its kind. With over 39 transformational spaces, guests embark on deeply personalised wellbeing journeys guided by experts in Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, sound healing, and energy work. The island is designed around biophilic principles, seamlessly blending architecture with nature to create an environment of true weightlessness.

JOALI is a lifestyle brand that blurs the lines of hospitality. Through collaborations with visionary designers like Aquazzura and incredible brands such as Ruinart Champagne, immersive dining experiences with world-renowned chefs, and curated wellbeing journeys, we create unforgettable moments of joy.”

We know you are passionate about female empowerment. How do you feel this reflects in the JOALI brand?

“Empowering women has always been a personal mission for me, and it is deeply woven into JOALI’s identity. I believe that diversity is a valuable asset. At JOALI, we are committed to creating opportunities for women to grow, lead, and redefine possibilities in hospitality. In fact, JOALI Maldives and JOALI BEING have been awarded the highest female ratio for a resort in the Maldives by the Ministry of Tourism for the past two consecutive years.

Our Leadership and Gender Diversity Programme is aligned with the UN Women’s gender equality campaign, ensuring meaningful career pathways for women at every level of our organisation. Through mentorship, leadership training, and skill development, we foster an environment where women can thrive. The Women in Art initiative at JOALI Maldives, launched in 2020, provides a vital platform for emerging Maldivian female artists, allowing them to showcase their talent and collaborate with renowned creatives. We also conduct art workshops for girls in local schools, nurturing the next generation of artists and storytellers.

As an independently owned and forward-thinking brand, JOALI has the freedom to challenge conventions and champion a culture of inclusivity. We embrace new ideas, invest in the aspirations of women, and continue to shape a workplace where passion is celebrated.”

What are three things you would tell your younger self?

“If I could give my younger self three pieces of advice, the first would be to never give up. Challenges will come, but perseverance and focus always lead to results. No matter how difficult the journey, staying true to your purpose and pushing forward will always open new doors.

The second would be to surround yourself with passionate and dedicated people. Success is never built alone. It is about moving forward together, uplifting one another, and creating an environment where ideas are nurtured. A great team is one that shares not only skills but also a collective spirit of joy and purpose.

Lastly, always lead with fairness and integrity. A workplace thrives when people feel valued, respected, and inspired. True success is not just about reaching milestones; it is about shaping a journey that is meaningful, fulfilling, and shared with those who inspire you.”

Vienna: an introduction

Vienna is a city that captivates all the senses, with its regal skyline of majestic Baroque mansions, manicured gardens and grand architecture; and the historic Ringstrasse showcasingan impressive array of buildings that reflect the city’s rich cultural heritage. Discover culinary delights throughout the city, where hearty dishes like crispy schnitzel and the decadent Sachertorte tantalise the taste buds. The charming coffee house culture offers a cosy atmosphere for savouring a cup of rich coffee while indulging in traditional sweet treats. When it comes to sound, Vienna stands in a league of its own, celebrated as the classical music capital of Europe. The opulence of the ball season, harmonious strains of orchestras, and the timeless melodies of illustrious composers echo through its concert halls; an unforgettable experience.

Operas & concerts

Vienna is a city with a plethora of magnificent venues that play host to a number of unforgettable operas, shows and concerts. One of the most well known opera houses is the spectacular Staatsoper, dating back to 1869 and situated on the Ringstrassen boulevard. There are also a number of historically significant venues known for their musical heritage and acoustics; including the Musikverein, Volksoper, Theater an der Wien, Konzerthaus, Mozarthaus, Schönbrunn Palace, Kursalon Hübner and Hofburg Palace, as well as churches such as Peterskirche and Karlskirche.

With many opportunities to see concerts and opera in Vienna, it can be difficult to know which venues to visit and what tickets to buy. From year round concerts to special events over the festive season and summer, there’s no better place to experience the best of the classical music. We’ve gathered a few of must-see concerts, shows and operas.

Summer Night Concert
An annual event taking place in June at Schönbrunn Palace, this open air concert is free to attend and is one of the great highlights of the Philharmonic year.
New Year’s Concert
A long standing tradition and concert consisting of the spectacular and nostalgic music from the family of Johann Strauss and its contemporaries. An incredibly popular event at the Musikverein, tickets are drawn from applications made in February, for the upcoming New Year.
Opera at Staatsoper
For first-timers, we’d recommend any of the following iconic opera in the opulent setting of the Staatsoper.
Mozart’s le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro)
Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute)
Strauss’ Die Fledermaus (The Bat)
Puccini’s Tosca
Beethoven’s Fidelio

Ball season

Dating back to the 18th century, the ball season in Vienna is a long-standing tradition known for its glitz, glamour and the world-famous waltz, of course. The season coincides with Carnival, traditionally starting on 11 November and ending on Shrove Tuesday. Each year, more than 450 balls take place in Vienna across various iconic venues. If it’s your first time at a Viennese ball, the world of elegant gowns, tiara’s, tailcoats and waltzing may be completely new to you. But be assured it is an enchanting experience that you will never forget. Nowhere does it quite like Vienna, steeped in tradition and heritage, we’ve curated tips and tricks to introduce you to the ball basics.

Dressing the part
To put it simply, dress to impress. For women, full-length evening or ball gowns are the norm and white is not appropriate unless you are a debutante. Many will accessorize with gloves and jewellery. For gentlemen, a tuxedo or tailcoat is usually the go-to. However, some balls may have their own dress code, which can be found on the event website or in the invitation. As
a rule of thumb, always think elegance and sophistication.
Dining and drinking
Toast to the night ahead with a glass of Austrian prosecco, and if the ball doesn’t offer a gala dinner ahead of the ceremony, be sure to book a dinner ahead of time – we recommend Silvio Nickol, Glasswing Restaurant and Restaurant OPUS. For your post-dancing re-fuel, visit one of the many traditional sausage stands, or on the night of the Opera Ball book a table at the Hotel Sacher for their exclusive After Hour Snacks.
Waltz workshops
Learn the ball basics at one of Vienna’s esteemed dancing schools. From private tuition and group workshops, and lessons for waltz beginners to those more advanced, there’s something that will help ball-goers become best prepared for the world-famous calendar of events. There are many schools around the city, but we’d recommend heading to the prominent Rueff or Elmayer dance schools for your introduction to the world of Viennese Ball tradition.

A GUATEMALAN TRANSFORMATION https://quintessentiallytravel.com/a-guatemalan-transformation/ https://quintessentiallytravel.com/a-guatemalan-transformation/#respond Sat, 04 May 2024 19:04:30 +0000 https://quintessentiallytravel.com/?p=352

From coffee to conservation

The area surrounding the Atitlán Nature Reserve has undergone a quite remarkable transformation over the last few centuries. As recently as the late 1700s, the site was home to a thriving Mayan population, but the incursion of colonial Spain in the 19th and 20th centuries meant that it became first a sugar plantation, then a coffee one under the ownership of Don Moises Rivera Soto. However, one of the Don’s descendants decided to convert the plantation into a conservation site at the close of the 1990s, opening first a butterfly preserve and accompanying nature trails.

Today, the site is a fully-fledged nirvana for nature enthusiasts, with hanging bridges traversing mighty waterfalls and the gentle calls of crickets and hummingbirds accompanying the lilting rhythms of a life less hectic. Meanwhile, those who crave more activity in their holidays can soar far above the coffee groves, plunging waters and lush vegetation via the Reserve’s many ziplines. Where else would you get such a burst of adrenaline alongside such restful repose?

Disconnect, destress, indulge

The remote location of the Reserve, coupled with the scenic serenity of the lake adjacent, makes this one trip which is guaranteed to put you firmly in touch with the ground beneath your feet. To make the experience that much more meaningful, we recommend staying at Casa Palopó on the lake’s eastern fringes. This stunning boutique hotel offers impeccable hospitality, incredible views and extraordinary fine dining opportunities, all with a firm emphasis on getting away from it all.

For example, the property is proud to operate a no-television policy, allowing guests the opportunity to fully unwind in its elegantly decorated interior. Indigenous artwork and charming Guatemalan antiques adorn the walls, while the four-poster beds are made from rich mahogany and topped with sumptuous Italian linen, offering the utmost in comfortable indulgence. Meanwhile, each room comes with its own private terrace looking onto the lake and the awe-inspiring panoramas beyond, while certain villas even boast their own infinity pool and hot tub.

Exploring further afield

It might be difficult to tear yourself away from all that lavish luxury, but the surrounding area offers plenty of opportunities for exploration. Aside from the Reserve itself, the lake is fringed by a multitude of diminutive towns and villages, each offering its own unique characteristics and charisma. The busy town of Panajachel, for example, is a popular gateway to the lake and its streets are awash with vendors selling traditional textiles and artisanal handicrafts.

Over on the opposite shore lies Santiago Atitlán, a fascinating insight into Mayan heritage. Alongside the colourful clothing of the locals, the town is also home to the Church of St James the Apostle, which is one of the oldest surviving Catholic buildings in the whole of central America. It’s also notable as the final resting place of Father Stanley Rother, the first US-born martyr who was tragically murdered during the Guatemalan Civil War. Neighbouring San Juan La Laguna is another itinerary highlight, perched atop a chocolate-box bay and home to the unique culture and crafts of its Tz’utujil inhabitants.

A trip to the Atitlán Reserve is the ideal way to experience Mayan culture in an unadulterated form, while the sustainably minded management of the Reserve offers up great opportunities to immerse yourself in the wildlife of the region. Add in a stay at Casa Papoló and you can’t fail to return from your sojourn rejuvenated and ready to tackle the rigours of the modern world afresh. 10 THINGS YOU MUST SEE WHEN VISITING SRI LANKA https://quintessentiallytravel.com/10-things-you-must-see-when-visiting-sri-lanka/ https://quintessentiallytravel.com/10-things-you-must-see-when-visiting-sri-lanka/#respond Sat, 04 May 2024 19:03:24 +0000 https://quintessentiallytravel.com/?p=349

1) World Heritage Kandy

Sacred and spiritual, the city of Kandy is the ideal place to discover more of Sri Lanka’s deeply religious roots. Stop here to unwind and take in the beautiful greenery of the surrounding mountains, relaxing in your own thoughts and taking a moment of peaceful reflection. Once fully refreshed, step out into the streets to unearth a wealth of precious and semi-precious stones in the jewellery shops, or find a handcrafted batik to take a little of the artistic culture home.

2) Dalada Maligawa Temple

Within Kandy, a trip to the Dalada Maligawa Temple is a must. Here, you’ll be able to learn more of Sri Lanka’s religious past, enriching your trip with spiritual significance. The Temple is also known as ‘The Temple of the Tooth’ as it was the final destination of the Lord Buddha’s sacred tooth in the 4th century AD, which itself has a deep history ready to be discovered. Walk through the ancient corridors and take in the gorgeous architecture, spending a few hours here before heading back into the city.

3) Anuradhapura

The first capital of Sri Lanka which saw the reign of over 100 Kings, Anuradhapura was once the most celebrated monastic cities in the Ancient world. The history left behind here will leave you with plenty to unearth, from temples to royal gardens. Be sure to reflect on your trip by finding the branch of the tree Lord Buddha once sat beneath, discovering true enlightenment, before cooling down in the lavish palaces of ancient Kings.

4) Sigiriya

When visiting Anuradhapura, get to grips with the country’s landscape by visiting Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the flats of the surrounding plains, Sigiriya rises dramatically from the ground, with rocky, near-vertical walls stretching to the sky where a flat-topped summit holds the remains of a long-lost civilisation. Climb to the summit for views of the plains before heading back to your hotel for some well-needed relaxation – the walk can be tiring, so why not treat yourself to a sunset drink or two once you’re back?

5) Koneswaram Temple

The Koneswaram Temple, or ‘The Temple of the Thousand Pillars’ is a breath-taking temple in the Trincomalee District of Sri Lanka. The temple is a religious pilgrimage centre for Hindu’s across the country and is steeped in history and tradition. The Temple overlooks Gokarna bay as well as the Indian Ocean and offers the chance for you to take in some incredible views whilst learning about the vast history of the temple which was originally built in 205 BC.

6) Dambulla Cave Temple

Art and culture combine in this ancient temple, which was carved into a 150 metre high rock between the periods of the 1st century BC and 993 AD. Walk through five different caves to find 150 Buddha statues, each one intricately crafted 2,000 years ago and added to by the old Kings of the country. Make sure to find the 14 meter long Buddha, which shouldn’t be too hard as it’s somewhat difficult to miss, and admire the brightly coloured paintings that adorn the cave ceilings.

7) Pigeon Island

Take a private boat to Pigeon Island, a marine park that’s home to many rock pigeons. Explore the wildlife and bask in the greenery of the island, before heading to the powdery, white-sand beach, broken up by huddles of rock pools. The real treasure here, however, lies beneath the clear waters where a whole ecosystem of marine life awaits. Take a snorkel and head out to catch a glimpse of the colourful coral, tropical reef fish, and slow-swimming turtles.

8) Bentota Beach

For ocean-lovers, you’ll have to take a trip to the small town of Bentota that lies on the country’s south-west coast. Here you’ll find Bentota Beach, a stretch-sand which lies between palm-trees and glittering blue sea. Head out onto the waves with a private luxury boat or yacht charter arranged by your Travel Specialist before relaxing with a refreshing drink on the sand, basking in the warmth of the Sri Lankan sun.

9) Adam’s Peak

If you’re looking for a challenge on your Sri Lankan adventure, take the pilgrimage up Adam’s Peak. Over 2,000 metres tall, this is by no means an easy climb, but looking down on clouds that trail through mountain tops at its peak makes it well worth it. Sacred to several faiths, this can also be a time of learning and cultural enrichment.

10) Ayurveda Retreat

Unwind from everyday life with an indulgent Ayurveda Retreat. You’ll be treated to ancient, herbal remedies to improve health and wellness, easing stress and helping with medical ailments. Old wisdom combines with modern luxury at a number of resorts across the country, including Reef Villa and Santani.

Sri Lanka is home to an abundance of culture, history, and tropical paradises, so be sure to get a taste of everything on your trip.

Our favourite city breaks in North America https://quintessentiallytravel.com/our-favourite-city-breaks-in-north-america/ https://quintessentiallytravel.com/our-favourite-city-breaks-in-north-america/#respond Tue, 28 Mar 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://quintessentiallytravel.com/our-favourite-city-breaks-in-north-america/

Cavallo Point – San Francisco, California

With such world-famous attractions as the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf and Alcatraz, it’s no wonder that San Francisco consistently ranks among the most visited cities in the States. Away from the tourist crowds, however, there are plenty of upscale restaurants, haute couture boutiques and classy cocktail bars to satisfy even the most discerning visitors to the city. With Napa Valley just a stone’s throw away as well, there are world-class vineyards within easy reach, too.

For those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown San Fran, Cavallo Point represents the perfect haven. Situated halfway between the city and nearby Sausalito, the resort enjoys sumptuous views of the famous bridge and offers guests access to an array of exciting onsite amenities and impeccable customer service. Sharpen your culinary skills with a cookery class, rejuvenate your mind and body with a spa treatment or simply reconnect with nature in the resort’s expansive green spaces.

Amangani – Jackson, Wyoming

If you prefer your breaks rural and rustic, head into the cowboy territory of Jackson, Wyoming. The quaint city has everything you might expect from a Wild West settlement, including horse-drawn carriages and delightfully nostalgic architecture, but the real draw here is Mother Nature. With elegant suites boasting panoramic balconies, three exemplary dining venues and a full range of onsite amenities (including a heated infinity pool), Amangani at the foot of the Teton Mountains is the ideal place to immerse yourself in everything that nature has to offer.

The close proximity of two outstanding National Parks in the shape of Yellowstone and Grand Teton mean there are plenty of stunning landscapes and unique wildlife to admire, while the region is not short on adrenaline-fuelled activities, either. In summer, you can explore the outback on foot, horseback, by boat or even via hot-air balloon. Meanwhile, the colder months draw winter sports aficionados, with plenty of skiing and snowboarding opportunities set against a breath-taking backdrop that simply isn’t to be missed.

Magee Homestead – Saratoga, Wyoming

For those travellers who are searching for something more geared towards an all-out wilderness retreat, Saratoga could represent the ideal option. The small town is hugely popular for its hot springs, which attracts wellness pilgrims from hundreds of miles around. Meanwhile, the region provides some of America’s best blue trout fishing opportunities, while winter sports enthusiasts will be delighted by the range of snowmobile trails on offer.

For the perfect complement to this pastoral paradise, check in to the Magee Homestead for an adults-only ranch experience. Situated inside a 30,000-acre cattle farm, this all-inclusive resort is the place to indulge in supreme relaxation and rejuvenation. As well as guided tours of the surrounding farmland and forestry areas, there is also a comprehensive spa and wellness centre, rifle range and a top-class restaurant serving delicious farm-to-fork delicacies. Meanwhile, each log cabin is lavishly decked out, creating the ultimate in bucolic luxury.

Clayoquot Wilderness Resort – Vancouver Island, Canada

Of course, it’s not just the US that is home to sumptuous destinations for high-end holidaymakers. Canada is blessed with a plethora of picture postcard locations as well, including the natural wonderland that is Vancouver Island. Located just a short ferry ride from British Columbia’s largest city, the island is teeming with flora and fauna of all kinds of finned, furred, feathered and flowering varieties.

To really take advantage of an outback experience, stay at Clayoquot Wilderness Resort tucked deep in the heart of the island. This eco-style safari lodge is reached by floatplane and boasts just 25 luxuriously equipped tents, creating a unique environment in which to relax and recharge. As remarkable as it is remote, this breath-taking resort offers once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to take part in a full range of hinterland activities on a daily basis, while the culinary artisans employed onsite mean you won’t want for the finest food, even in the middle of all that rugged splendour.

Four Seasons Downtown New York, New York City

At the other end of the scale, New York City is the most populous metropolis in the USA and represents the pinnacle of an activity-packed city break. Whether it’s the theatrical spectacles of Broadway you crave or the unlimited retail therapy opportunities found on Fifth Avenue, the Big Apple has something to tantalise every palate. And if it does all get a little overwhelming, the expansive greenery of Central Park is never far away.

For an exclusive hotel in an ideal location, stay at the Four Seasons Downtown on the fringes of the world-famous TriBeCa neighbourhood. The spacious suites at this prestigious landmark make excellent use of natural light, allowing the sun’s rays to flow in during the daytime and gifting visitors a remarkable vista over the City That Never Sleeps. With an a la carte restaurant helmed by celebrated chef Wolfgang Puck and an entire floor given over to its health and wellness centre, you might even be tempted not to leave the hotel at all.

Australia

The bunny is well-known animal associated with Easter celebrations and whilst Australians typically celebrate Easter like most other countries, they replace the Easter bunny for their native bilby which is an endangered species. This tradition came about in a bid to raise awareness and bilbies have become a symbol of Easter in Australia.

Discover the vast and unique wildlife with our Explore Australia’s Wild Side holiday, perfect for all the family.

France

From chocolate eggs to chicken eggs. In the town of Bessières, thousands of people gather on the morning of Easter Monday to cook a giant omelette usually with around 15,000 eggs and 40 cooks. For those celebrating at home, the whole family comes together to breaks eggs in their homes, sharing the omelette for lunch and maybe even dinner as well.

If this has inspired you to discover more French traditions and countryside, explore our Taste of France itinerary.

Norway

Nordic countries are known for their epic crime dramas which have garnered international appeal so this unexpected Easter tradition perhaps should have been more expected. In Norway, the nation immerses themselves into crime drama books, with longer than most, a five day Easter celebration that includes reading their favourite “Påskekrims” or page-turner, alongside their traditional Kvikk Lunsj chocolate.

If you’re drawn to the thrill of Norway, perhaps 48 hours in Bergen is one trip for your list.

USA

Dating back to 1878, the Easter Egg Roll event takes place on the grounds of the White House with families coming together on Easter Monday to enjoy games, live entertainment and story time. The public can enter a ballot for their chance to win a ‘golden’ ticket to attend the event which is organised by the First Lady. Each year the White House create commemorative eggs, for 2002 these come in spring colours of blue, pink, gold, green and yellow. Whilst this year’s event has been cancelled as results of the global pandemic, you can watch highlights from 2019’s White House Easter Egg Roll.

When visiting Washington, the home of the White House a stay at the Hay Adams is must.

Hungary

Historically an Easter tradition in Hungary was to sprinkle girls and women with water as they used to believe in the cleaning and fertility benefits of water. Women and girls would dress up traditionally outfits and wait for the men and boys to come with a “sprinkle poem”, if this was well-received the man would then pour a bucket of water, usually cold so that they would scream. Today, this tradition has evolved to a sprinkle of perfume or cologne in the woman’s hair – a lot more pleasant we imagine. Whilst this tradition is less common in Hungary’s bigger cities, men are expected to still read a sprinkle poem to their female relatives.

If you’ve dreamed of visiting Hungary, discover the capital, Budapest with a stay at the Four Seasons Budapest.

UK

Celebrating Easter in the UK traditionally includes some themed games including egg decorating, egg and spoon races and the most-loved Easter Egg Hunt where chocolate eggs or bunnies are hidden around the home and garden, with whoever finds the most crowned the winner. Other traditions in the UK include the English folk dance that dates back to the Middle Ages, Morris dancing is where men dress up in costumes with bells and coloured ribbons and dance through the streets with small sticks which they clap along in tune. Originally this also included one of the dancers sticks to hold a pigs bladder, his job was to hit young women on the head as sign of good luck – thankfully this part of the tradition no longer continues today.

If an escape to the countryside is calling, we love Linthwaite House which is set atop a hill in the scenic town of Windemere, located in the Lake District National Park.

Peru

Pascua is widely celebrated in Latin America with most of the population being catholic and celebrations lasting a week, from Domingo de Ramos (Palm Sunday) and ending on Domingo de Pascua (Easter Sunday). In Peru, Semana Santa (the Holy Week) sees the ancient Inca capital come alive with colour as hundreds dressed in vibrant fabrics fill the streets on Easter Monday to honour the city’s protector, Señor de los Temblores, a black Christ who is situated on Cusco Cathedral in Cusco. A figure of Christ is created for a procession where they replace his crown of thorns with a flower crown made of ñucchu, a peruvian red flower. Families all across the country create ñucchu flower crowns which are offered to the gods during the Easter ceremony.

The allure of Peru is hard to ignore, this two-week adventure in the amazon will see you experience the countries dazzling culture.

India

With a small percentage (just 2.3%) of India’s population being of Christian religion, the state of Goa is one of the best Easter destinations in India to celebrate as it was a Portugal colony in pre-Independent India. Festivities include street plays, dances and the tradition of baking Easter cakes to be shared amongst friends and family – and it wouldn’t be an Indian holiday without colour, and lots of it. Brightly coloured lanterns are exchanged during Easter as well as the Holy Cross.

Inspired by the vibrant charm of India, our Golden Triangle trip encompasses the very best the country.

How a volcano eruption created a beach in Hawaii https://quintessentiallytravel.com/how-a-volcano-eruption-created-a-beach-in-hawaii-2/ https://quintessentiallytravel.com/how-a-volcano-eruption-created-a-beach-in-hawaii-2/#respond Fri, 27 Mar 2020 00:00:00 +0000 https://quintessentiallytravel.com/how-a-volcano-eruption-created-a-beach-in-hawaii-2/ As far as dream holiday destinations go, Hawaii is surely counted among the most desirable on the planet. A natural paradise quite unlike anywhere else, Hawaii's isolated location and long history of geological activity make it one of the biologically diverse regions found anywhere on Earth. Jagged volcano peaks, lush tropical rainforests and startlingly beautiful beaches mean that the USA's 50th state is also one of its most popular with tourists from all over the globe.
rn
rnNow, this amazing archipelago has one more reason for you to promote it to the top of your travel wish list. In 2018, the explosive eruption of Kīlauea – the most active of the five volcanoes on the Big Island – decimated the surrounding countryside. In the process, it also created something truly stunning: the world's newest black sand beach. To witness the wonder of the natural world in motion and experience a phenomenon quite like no other, make Hawaii your next port of call.

Joali – Muravandhoo Island, Maldives

Located within one of the largest and deepest atolls in the world, Joali lies in the middle of the expansive Indian ocean in the Maldives – it doesn’t come much more remote than that. With white sandy beaches, stunningly clear waters of topaz and all manner of exotic sea-life populating them, it’s guaranteed to transport you to another world from the one you’re accustomed to. The property’s prime location on the Manta Ray migration route means that at certain times of the year, there are up to 40 specimens of these incredible creatures within swimming distance of the reef.

Our Travel Manager, Katie Macdonald says, “For an exotic experience, opt for the lush greenery of a beach villa. Meanwhile, the floating Japanese restaurant is an absolute must, with baby tipped sharks that swim alongside as you dine on sushi, teppanyaki and sip from the extensive sake menu.”

Amangiri, Utah, USA

There are few places on Earth more dramatic than Canyon Point in Utah, USA. This rugged landscape is generously endowed with canyons and chasms, mesas and mountaintops, free-running rapids and slow-moving desert sands. Indeed, for an environment that seems so inhospitable at first glance, the fact that humans have called this place home for more than 10,000 years seems quite remarkable.

Reconnect with your ancestors by following in their footsteps throughout the many hiking trails or soar above it all in a hot-air balloon. Then, when the day is done, retire to your luxury suite at Amangiri to indulge in a post-adventure banquet and settle in with a restorative digestif.

Sal Salis Ningaloo, Ningaloo Reef, Australia

Home to over 500 species of multi-coloured fish and 250 varieties of coral, as well as a whole host of sharks, rays and turtles, the reef has the added advantage of being accessible by snorkel rather than scuba gear.

The Sal Salis, an exclusive beach retreat, is perfectly placed to take advantage of all that wildlife. The camp offers guests safari style tents, water-based adventures and the most comfort-inducing blanket of stars you could possibly imagine.

Tierra Atacama Lodge and Spa, San Pedro de Atacama, Chile

Meanwhile, back at ground level, the high-altitude lagoons, bubbling geysers and moon-like valley of the surrounding wilderness provide plenty of opportunities for daytime activity, too.

The lavish lodge and spa has been designed with the utmost in indulgence in mind, with each spacious suite boasting floor-to-ceiling views of the Andes mountain range and delicately designed furnishings that take their inspiration from the wonders all around.

Bawah Reserve, Anambas, Indonesia

For water sports adventurers and relaxation vacationers alike, the Bawah Reserve in Indonesia is the perfect place to be at one with nature. This stunning eco-luxe resort is situated within a previously uninhabited marine conservation area and is only accessible by seaplane from Singapore airport, meaning you’re guaranteed to arrive in style and pass your days in blissful seclusion.

At one with nature – hammocking in the Arctic https://quintessentiallytravel.com/at-one-with-nature-hammocking-in-the-arctic/ https://quintessentiallytravel.com/at-one-with-nature-hammocking-in-the-arctic/#respond Thu, 26 Mar 2020 00:00:00 +0000 https://quintessentiallytravel.com/at-one-with-nature-hammocking-in-the-arctic/

A remarkable history

It’s no wonder that Halipuu commands such an aura of magic and majesty, since the site has an incredible story attached to it. With the outbreak of World War Two, countless lives across the globe were thrown into disarray – including that of Kaarle Raekallio. Just a toddler at the time, Kaarle was forced to flee his island home and seek refuge on the Finnish mainland. As compensation for the land they lost, the government gifted Kaarle’s family a small parcel of Halipuu forest to try and help them put down roots in their new home.

Fast forward more than half a century and Kaarle has become Pappa (“grandfather”), the patriarch of his own family. But it’s not just humans that Pappa counts among his kin – after nurturing his woodland to maturity with the intention to harvest it for timber, Pappa found himself unable to part with his new friends. Instead, he put his Lappish pine offspring up for adoption and opened up Halipuu to the whole world, inviting tree huggers and nature enthusiasts from every corner of the globe to come and experience his own personal piece of paradise.

Reconnect, rejuvenate, relax

Guests at Halipuu forest can expect to be heartily welcomed by Pappa’s family – of both the arboreal and corporeal varieties. After a gentle stroll through the idyllic woodland surrounding the Raekallio homestead, you’ll be walked through a series of meditation and relaxation exercises designed to put you in the perfect frame of mind to enjoy your experience. Then you’ll be cocooned into a warm and cosy hammock to reconnect with nature and enjoy the Arctic environment in a manner quite unlike any other.

After your session under the pines is complete, you’ll be treated to a warming blackcurrant soup and a homemade snack crafted by Grandmother Terttu for the ultimate in Nordic hospitality. The site is open all through the year, meaning you can visit during the International Day of Forests in March, Tree Hugger’s Week in August or even come in the icy extremes of winter for a chance to catch a glimpse of the elusive but enthralling Aurora Borealis. Whenever you visit, you’re sure to return from your getaway refreshed and ready to take on the world once more.

Supporting sustainability

Visitors to Halipuu are not only guaranteed a truly restorative experience, but one that’s good for the body as well as the mind. That’s because the Lappish pines in Pappa’s woodland are highly sensitive to air pollution, meaning that the flourishing flora all around is testament to the cleanliness and quality of the Arctic air. By supporting Halipuu with your custom, you’re helping to sustain the forest for future generations to enjoy, as well.

Indeed, you don’t even have to arrive in person to make a difference. Halipuu runs an online adoption programme, in which patrons can sponsor a tree for a period of five years. During that time, they’re encouraged to stop by and see their adopted alpine friend as many times as they like, or else connect with the Raekallio family over video link if a physical visit isn’t possible. Contributing to conservation schemes such as these is key to giving back to the planet and ensuring that it’s every bit as verdant and vibrant decades down the line.

Finnish fancies

Kalipuu comprises just one opportunity to be at one with nature, but Finland as a whole and Lapland in particular offer a variety of similar experiences. For those who wish to see this captivating country in all its splendour and reconnect with their natural roots in the process, an extended trip might be an ideal option. As well as dropping in on Pappa and his brood, there’s also the chance to hunt for the Aurora within the Arctic Circle over a number of days. Traverse the tundra in a husky-drawn sled, indulge in an exotic bath in a geothermal spa and even say hello to Saint Nicholas and his reindeer.

Luxury accommodation options in Lapland are also in high supply. The Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort is home to the original glass igloo, allowing guests to stare up at the starry night sky or – if they’re lucky – witness the Northern Lights from the comfort of their own bed. For a more panoramic place to rest your head, the Arctic Treehouse Hotel is a bucket-list destination perching up among the pines. Meanwhile, those in the market for more traditional lodgings may prefer the Arctic Light Hotel, which is housed inside the former City Hall of Rovaniemi. Wherever you feel most comfortable, we’ve got an option to suit.
